- I am in my fifth year as a Social Studies teacher at Coventry High School and I love my students and my subject. I received my BA in History from ECSU and will complete my MA in American History at CCSU this spring. Social Security is a progressive reform that was passed on August 14th 1935 by Franklin D. Roosevelt, in one his fireside chats. It is a progressive act because it was instituted so that the baby boomers would have adequate retirement once they are done working. According to http://www.urban.org/publications/311016.html, it was passed so that income may be redistributed from those with higher lifetime earnings to those who have lower lifetime earnings.

ReplyDeleteOne of the most recent example of progressive legislation within the past 50 years is that of the "Health Care Reform Bill" pasted on March 23, 2010. This bill will reduce the governments deficit by an average of $143 Billon over the first ten years. It will give millions of people affordable and suitable health insurance for tho's who orignaly could not afford it. It will reduce Elderly medication costs by nearly 50%. Now young children with preexisting health conditions no longer can be rejected.

The Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act is an example of progressive legislation in the past 50 years. This act was signed into law on July 21, 2010 by Barack Obama and was designed to change the financial regulation in the United States, this law affects almost every aspect of the nation's financial services industry. The act changes regulatory structure, combining or removing old agencies, and making new ones. This act was proposed in response to the recession and was designed to prevent future financial crises so that another Great Depression will not happen. The bill is named after Christopher J. Dodd and Barney Frank who initially proposed the law. Many people consider this Act the most sweeping change to financial regulation since the Great Depression.

ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, a progressive reform in the early 1900s was formed called the Anti-Prostitution Campaign. This reform followed the Mann Act of 1910 which prohibited interstate transportation of women for immoral purposes. By 1915 mostly every state had outlawed prostitution. But, in some states like Nevada, prositution is legal and you cannot get in trouble for it.

The Pure Food and Drug act of 1906 is a great example of a progressive reform. The act required the new organization called the Food and Drug Administration to inspect and test all food and drugs that were to be used by humans. The act also required the prescription of a physican in order to purchase drugs. Can you believe that before this act, anyone could buy any drug they wanted. Lastly this act required a warning label on all addictive drugs. This act is a step towards liberalism because it made the government more active and gave it more of a role in society.

ReplyDeleteA large reform that was put into effect in 1906 was the Meat Inspection Act. This was largely due to the publication of Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle." This publication revealed the horrors of the meat packing industry and showed the nation what was really going into their food. By putting this reform into effect, meat packing industires were now regularly inspected to ensure the safety of food being exported from the meat plants and to observe safe procedures in packing all of the meat. This reform is progressive because it bettered the society with the health concerns that had been brought up especially after "The Jungle." These procautions are still in effect today. This goes to show just how much power a single reform can have on a society.
ReplyDeleteEven though it failed, prohibition is an example of progressive reform. It was created through the 18th Amendment in late 1917, and was repealed in 1930. It was created for the purpose of outlawing alcohol, so that it wouldn't be inside of the country anymore. Of course, people didn't abide by this law, and they continued to drink by illegally creating their own forms of alcohol. This act was progressive/liberal because the government was trying to take control of society by attempting to solve a "social ill," which was the fact that too many people in the country were using alcohol in negative ways. The people of the country illegally making their own alcohol, and also more people drinking than before, it was led to the amendment's repeal in 1930.

This act was to prevent any harmful or unsafe ingrediants in food to be eliminated from the manufactoring of the food. Also,to manufactor foods in a safe and healthy way. President Theodore sighned the act in 1906. This act was passed on because before the Act had been created food products did not have formal/accurate labels and the customers never really knew what they had been consuming into their bodies. This reform is liberal because the government helped the society making a little bit of progress.
ReplyDeleteThe La Folette progressives were a third party following WWI in the early 1920s. They pushed for government ownership, tax reform, agricultural reform and judicial reform. Placing control of resources including railroads, timber forests and coal in the hands of the government. They also lowered taxes for the middle and lower classes.

The Law was written by Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut and Congressman Barney Frank of Massachusetts both of whom are Liberal Democrats. This Act takes away control from businesses and stock brokers and gives more power to the Government through reform and restrictions. By taking away power from businesses and the people it gives that power to the govenment making it bigger and moving away from the Capitolist System, thus making the Act a Progressive and therefore Liberal Reform.

ReplyDeleteThis progressive reform prohibited trusts and controlled monopolies that were harming competition among businesses. This reform helped to support and keep small businesses. This reform is liberal because it is was created by the govenrment to help protect people who own or work at a small business. The government stepped in and did something about powerful trusts and monopolies.
An example of a progressive reform is Prohibition. The reform was created because for many social reformers, alcohol was a social evil that caused the breakdown of marriages, violence and abuse. There were many in the country who wanted to prohibit liquor. It is liberal because the government was depended on to enforce the reform. Prohibition was created in 1917.
ReplyDeleteOne progressive reform was beautification campaigns. Some reformers wanted to improve the urban environment by making it more pleasant and attractive. This, like the housing reforms, was based on their idea that an improved environment meant improved people. Some of their reforms included parks, civic centers, and better transportation systems. Some historians argue that these were superficial reforms enacted to please the middle-class inhabitants or tourists of cities, but did not really address the dire problems of the masses who lived in the slums.

Food and drug law past 1906 by Theodore Roosevelt. The muckrakers had successfully heightened public awareness of safety issues stemming from careless food preparation procedures and the increasing incidence of drug addiction from patent medicines, both accidental and conscious. Scientific support came from Dr. Harvey W. Wiley, the Department of Agriculture's chief chemist, who published his findings on the widespread use of harmful preservatives in the meat-packing industry. The experience of American soldiers with so-called “embalmed beef” during the Spanish-American War added impetus to the movement.
ReplyDeleteIt's liberal because it is a change that benefits that everybody gets fresh/healthy food and not just the people who have enough money to buy healthy/fresh food.
The Progressive Movement was initially an attempt to cure several of the ills that lied within the society of America. An example of a social reform would be The Pure Food and Drug Act created in 1906,this act not only created the Food and Drug Administration, but it also insured that all foods and drugs would be tested and deemed safe for human consumption before being distributed to the public. The Pure Food and Drug Act also required all drugs that could become addictive must have a label warning the consumer of its contents and effects. Also this act made it mandatory that the governmet inspected all meat products and stopped the production, sale, or distribution of foods that contained impurities.

This progressive reform was established mainly due to the reason of the book 'The Jungle' published by Upton Sinclair. Upton Sinclair shared with the public what really went on in a meat packing industry. He shared the all the horrors and what went into there food. The reform was established so that meat packing industries could now be inspected on a regular basis and to ensure the safety transported food. This reform would be progressive because it came about due to the book 'The Jungle' in showing nation that we had something to be concerned about. And today these inspection still take place.

This was founded in 1933. 3,000,000 young men between the ages of 18-25 received work on building railroads, forestry labor(including planting trees) and flood control. These jobs were created for those who had no work and needed the money to provide for their families.

This was a major reform of the 1920's because it granted women the right of the 19th Amendment granting them the right and responsibilities of citizenship, making it so men and women could have equal rights. This reform is liberal because only people in the government can create amendments to benifit all the people and correct social ills.
ReplyDeleteAn example of a progressive reform is social security. It was passed by FDR in August 1935. The purpose of social security was to provide adequate retirement and distribute income. This was a progressive policy because it was run by the government to help those with lower income by redistributing income from those with higher income. With social security, it seems as though it has that Robin Hood-"steal from the rich and give to the needy" feel to it, which happens to be a progressive or liberal way of thinking.

It was created to ensure that products such as food, cosmetics, drugs and even items such as toothpaste were not harmful and instead safe. This act would be considered Liberal because it is the government controlling and regulating (safety) throughout businesses and the like.

ReplyDeleteOne example of a progressive reform is the Clayton Antitrust Act. This prohibited business monopolies and it protected against dangerous food practices. Although originally created in 1890, the full effect didn’t go through until 1914 when congress strengthened the act by also creating the federal trade commission. This federal law prohibited against price-fixing against large corporations. This was progressive/liberal because the government tried to take control of businesses- going against capitalist ideas.

The people just went to illegal bars and drank which in the end caused more problems for america. This reform is liberal because the government was trying to take control and change society but in the end made it worse because more people went and drank than before.

This was liberal because change came about through the government. The government was needed to enforce this reform. Another reason why this is liberal is because liberals believe in the rights of individuals
ReplyDeleteOne example of Progressive Reform is the formation of the FDA or Food and Drug Administration. Progressivism is said to be the "humanizing" of capitalism. With no government involvment, business in the food industry could get away with putting less than savory, and sometimes harmful to health items into their products without the general public's knowledge. Although the FDA did not have it's official name until the 1930's, their work began with the passing of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act which made made mislabeling or adulterating foods illegal. While the FDA's responsiblities have changed slightly over time, their mission to keep all foods labeled properly and safe for consumption remains the same. This is a classic example of the government regulating some goods (the food & drugs) for the protection of all (the consumers) in society; exactly what progressivism is supposed to do.

ReplyDeleteOne example of a progressive reform is the Pendleton Act. This was passed in 1883 in order to regulate federal civil service hiring. Citizens all around were expecting new, well paying jobs. The 1883 act, was also established in order to prohibit the demoting or firing of federal employees based on political beliefs.

An example is Women's Christain Temperance Union (WCTU). 1874. Many women and children wee being exposed to alchol and its negative effects. There were many laws passed on alchol such as government regulations and insturcting alchalism in schools. The WCTU became international in the 1880's.
ReplyDeleteOne example of progressive reform Housing and Sanitation Reforms, Progressive reformers urged cities to pass legislation which set standards for housing and such sanitation matters as garbage pick-up and sewage systems. The legislation would require the hiring of inspectors to see that these standards were met. Many of the inspectors first hired by city governments under these reforms were women, such as Jane Addams.

ReplyDeleteThe Social Security program began in the 1930s in the United States against the backdrop of economic hardships created by the Great Depression. In the United States, the Great Depression of the 1930s caused high unemployment and economic stress nationwide, leading President Franklin D. Roosevelt to announce in 1934 his intention to provide a Social Security program. President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law on August 14, 1935. The program began by making lump sum payments to retirees until 1940, when monthly benefit payments began.
An example of a progressive reform is Woman Sufferage. Woman Sufferage was the movement to secure the right to vote for woman. Many different kinds of women (race, class, and ethnicity) joined the campaign to win the federal amendment, but the movement was mainly led by middle and upper-class women. In the United States woman started fighting for thier right to vote at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848. It was not until the 19th Amendment was passed in 1920 that woman gained that right. Woman Sufferage is a progressive reform because it was fighting for the freedom to vote for woman and it was the governments job to grant that and protect it.

It was aimed toward the problems involving the trafficking of people and prostitution. This reform was progressive because it was trying take a step towards a safer and healthier America.

The Great Depresssion caused lots of unemployment and financial stress all over the United States which is why President Roosevelt began to provide this Social Security Program. The Act provided money to help many people such as children, the blind, and the unemployed. Also, it provided many families with health programs. The Social Security Act is considered a liberal act because it required the government to step in and take control. The citizens depended on the government to enforce the act.

An example of a progressive reform would be womans rights which was created in 1920. It allowed women the right to vote which is also the reason it is progressive.
ReplyDeleteIn 1919, senate passed the 19th amendment. This amendment allowed, for the first time in the history of the United States, woman's suffrage. This was created for the progressive idea that for a true democracy to take place, more and more people must have a say in the workings of government.

ReplyDeleteThe Pure Food and Drug Act of June 30, 1906 is a progressive reform that required the federal inspection of meat products and prevented the manufacture, sale, or transportation of adulterated food products and poisonous medicine. The act was put into place as a result of public realization of the unsanitary conditions in the factories where food and medicine were produced and packed. This realization came as a result of books and articles such as “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair. This act is liberal because it further involved the Government in the health and regulation of what the nations citizens eat drink and what drugs they take.
ReplyDeleteThe Federal Trade Commission Act, passed in 1914, prevented businesses from having monopolies and from "using unfair competition methods and unfair or deceptive acts" to mislead consumers or other companies in order to get ahead of competitiors. This act was passed because large corporations had been creating monopolies and therefore putting smaller companies out of business. This act is progressive because it involves the government having control over an aspect of business.

This reform gave the women's the right to vote and have equal say as the men did. This reform is liberal because the nineteenth amendment was supported by the government and created by congress.

By putting this act into effect it required that the meat and other foods be inspected before being released to the public. It is progressive because it ensured the public that the food that they were eating was safe and not contaminated.

ReplyDeleteThe Mann Act (1910), was created to end white slave trafficking. From 1907 to 1912, the American population realized that immigrants coming into the US were being trafficked and forced in to brothels and other prostitution rings. During this time, the US public went into a state of hysteria, convinced that no woman was safe from the groups of men that would coerce women into prostitution. From this state of hysteria came the White Slave Traffic Act of 1910, (commonly called the Mann act because of it's sponsorship from representative James Mann from Illinois). This reform is progressive because it was created by the government to provide safety and protection to vulnerable Americans.
ReplyDeleteOn April 8, 1890 the Sherman Anti-Trust Act was passed prohibiting the buying and purchasing of trust. Trusts are "agreements" that state that one person has control over the money of another person/ corporation. This progressive reform named after Senator John Sherman, is a capitalistic idea and was created to limit the "economic" power of is large corporations and businesses. Under this act no one corporation can have a lot of power, and smaller business’s assets are protected.

President Obama signed the health care bill on march 23. this reform was created to help people who couldn't afford medical insurance. it is liberal because it was government taking action to help citizens get insurance
ReplyDeleteThe Sherman Antitrust Act was passed in 1890 was the first measure of Congress to prohibit trusts/monopolies. Progressives such as Senator John Sherman felt there should be a more equal playing field in our capitalist economy. They felt that trust/monopolies that reached a certain point became too powerful and could begin driving out small businesses. To counter this affect, the Sherman Antitrust Act gave the government the power to bring cases against trusts in order to dissolve them. This is act was progressive in the fact that it took the power from trusts and monopolies and redistributed it to the government, and it was the first to do so. Therefore the government now had the control to handicap these large corporations and aide the smaller businesses that had previously struggled. This is a very liberal idea because it added government power, while at the same time creating an equal opportunity for all businesses rather than the more conservative ideas of trusts and monopolies, of every man for themselves.

An example of a progressive act was The Sherman Antitrust Act. It prohibited monopolies or unreasonable combination's of companies to restrict or in any way control interstate commerce. It was created in 1890. This progressive reform is liberal because the government created to protect the public from the failure of the market.
ReplyDeleteJudaism, a monotheistic religion is a progressive reform. This progressive reform was created in the early 19th century. This reform is liberal because it deals with the government working with religion.
ReplyDeleteA great example of a progressive reform would be the Pendleton Act. It was in 1883 by the federal government to regulate federal civil service hiring. Before it was passed, federal positions would be assigned to the political party that was in power and was happy to hire supporters for the winning party. This is progessive/liberal because the government got involved to make the society more equal by regulating civil service hiring.

ReplyDeleteThe Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 makes a great example of a progressive reform. It limited children under the age of 18 to have better working conditions. The 16 and 17 year olds were taken from work involving machinery, harmful material, and large equipment. Although this was a small change, it made a large impact as less teens were getting harmed by these machines. As well as the above, 14 and 15 year olds could only have a 40 hour work week at this point. This helped the youth of America get an education, rather than starting work too early.
ReplyDeleteThe Settlement house movement was enacted in the 1920's, They wanted to improve the lives of less fortunate by providing them with education and child care, teaching English and other basic skills, helping the immigrants get better jobs and housing, and uplifting them culturally and also trying to americanize immigrants.

ReplyDeleteA good example of a progressive reform in America was Prohibition. Prohibition was put into effect through the 18th amendment which prohibited the sale, consumption and creation of alcohol. The 18th amendment was created and put into effect in 1917 but only lasted until 1930. This reform is progressive and liberal because it's an example of the government trying to control their country and what was going on inside of it. Although this reform failed it is still a good example of a progressive reform because it deals with the government 'helping' it's people in a way of them basically having control over everyone.

This act was progressive because it improved the quality of factory meat making it beneficial to public health.

ReplyDeleteThe Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) was established June 1933. It set up a system of banking to garuntee individual bank deposits up to a certain amount provided by the federal government. This is a progressive/liberal act because it "humanizes" the banking system, so if something is to happen to the your money in the bank, you have the insurance that you will be paid your money back up to a certain amount. It is also liberal because it is government getting involved in business in order to solve the problems of the people.

ReplyDeleteAn example of progressive reform is the passage in 1914 of both the Clayton Antitrust Act and the Federal Trade Act.Both of these prohibited business monopolies and protected the public against dangerous food manufacturing practices. This was a liberal act because the federal laws outlawed price-fixing by large corporations, this meant that the government was focused on controlling the big businesses in order to help the people.

The Interstat Commerce Act was in 1887. It required that railroads charge fair rates to their customers and make those rates public. It was progressive/liberal becuase the government created this reform to make sure that the railroad did not over charge and that they were fair to the public.
ReplyDeleteThe tax reform is a progressive reform because it argues that the middle and lower classes have to pay more taxes than the upper class and the Progressives lowered the tax rates for those groups and increases for the wealthy.(1924) It was liberal because the government helped pass this reform to help the middle and lower classes and to make it "fair" for all the classes.

In 1924 the independent presidential candidacy of Robert LaFollette was pushed to pass, the reform movement focused on social issues related to fair wages and safe working conditions. Legislation outlawing child labor, limits on working hours, and a minimum wage for working women were important national issues of the progressive era.
ReplyDeleteThe Pure Food and Drug Act was established in 1911. This act made it so that food and drug companies had to labled the ingredients on the boxes and containers of their products. Its liberal because the government got involved by enforcing this act to make the public aware of what they were ingesting.

ReplyDeleteThe Meat Inspection Act "required that meat processing plants be inspected to ensure the use of good meat and health-minded procedures." This reform was passed in 1906 after the release of the book The Jungle because the public was now informed about the unclean circumstances the meat was processed in. This reform is liberal due to the fact that the federal government wanted to "preserve the health and safety of American citizens."

An example of a progressive reform is the recent passing of the Affordable Care Act, which became law on March 23, 2010. The Progressives believe that health care is a right, not a privilidge, which makes it progressive/liberal. It also shows a large government involvement in fixing social problems, which is a liberal idea. The purpose of this law is to give more affordable health care to more people. Among other things, it extends insurance coverage to 32 million people. It gets rid of the pre-existing conditions rules and allows children to be covered by a parent until age 26 whether or not they go to college.
ReplyDeleteAn example of a progressive reform is Welfare. The reform was created in the late 30's included in FDR's New Deal. It was created to help improve the lives of less fortunate. The idea is with welfare people can sustain a decent enough life until they can improve their jobs adn make more money. Very liberal reform that goes against laizee fair and every man for themselves to make money.

It was created to so people did not have to live in unsanitary and unsafe conditions. The legislation was required to hire inspectors that made sure all requirements for these conditions were met. This reform is progressive/liberal because the government had been involve to help people when there conditions were bad.

ReplyDeleteOne example of progressive reform was the passing of the Pendleton Act in 1883. This act required potential federal employees to provide proof of qualifications related to the job. Before the Pendleton Act was passed, federal positions were obtained by who you knew, not by your skills. Positions were assigned to the political party in power and the winning party generally looked forward to hiring people that supported the party. This act also prohibited the demoting or firing of federal workers based on their own personal political beliefs. The Civil Service Commission was established to enforce the provisions of this act following the passing of the Pendleton Act.
ReplyDeleteThis act is more progressive because it ensures government officials in power are not giving supporting positions to their friends, family, and political supporters just because they know them and not because they are qualified for the job. This also ensures that people in federal positions can actually do the job they are hired for, making for a more effective government.

ReplyDeleteThe Progressive Reform that I chose was the Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914. This act strengthened ths Sherman Antitrust Act by outlawing the creation of any monoply which was a large business that had total control of the market and eliminated competition. This trust also stated that unions were not subject to antitrust legislation. This Act was liberal and progressive because it was promoting equal opportunity and limiting business so that it fair to everyone in society. This is liberal because government took a large role in business.

The Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938 was the first federal law to put restricitons on age and hours of work for children. This is liberal because the governemnt had to step i pace to protect the children. I rest my case.
ReplyDeleteWomen's suffrage is an example of progressive reform. This gradually happened over the course of many years and became an actual ammendment to the constitution, in 1920. The ammendment was made due to modern beliefs changing and the public support of this change. This is considered progressive because Women having the ability to vote was important to the "progress"of our society.

The new health care bill is completely progressive and liberal; it is the government taking action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for Americans by the fact it is giving all Americans the equal ability of having access to affordable health care. It is the government making sure they are protecting the liberties of the people by stopping the abuse of insurances companies.
The women's suffrage act is an example of a progressive reform. The problem was simple, women lacked the right to vote and so they were not entitled to have the rights of a U.S citizen. The U.S constitutional convention placed voting qualifications in the power of the states, in 1787. Shortly after, women in most states lost the right to vote. Women were in need to regain there place in society.
ReplyDeleteAn example of a Progressive reform is Factory Safety Regulations and Heath Act. These regulations were important to this time period because in the Progressive Era many adolescents went to work instead of school, and would work long hours with an extremely low pay. Also, other regulations were created such as factory inspection laws, workers comp, and a minimal age someone was able to work. With these laws factories became safer and cleaner, children went back to school, and women were not overworked. This regulation was created on December 29, 1970 when President Richard Nixon signed the bill giving the Federal Government the power to enforce safety and heath laws for all workers.
ReplyDeleteThese regulations were created for the heath and safety of all workers and for customers buying the products made in the factories, such as with Upton Sinclair’s novel The Jungle which explained the truth of meat factories and slaughterhouses. The unclean truth made people furious of the many men who’s death’s had been hidden away inside the factories, and the horrible ways the meat companies made money. Such as dying the meat a brown color to hide the obvious start of molding. This regulation is in fact Progressive/Liberal because the goal for these laws was to create an equal opportunity for all workers; it was trying to cure social ills and civil liberties within the community for safety and heath for all. These laws were meant to protect all humans’ individuals’ rights.

National Industrial Recovery Act, was set in place to create minimum wages. The NRA was inacted on June 16,1933. This reform is liberal/progressive because it helped stimulate the economy and it's liberal because since everyone had minimum wages it would set a standard for people to work and know they can't be paid under the table because it's ilegal.
ReplyDeleteOn 18 February 1920 the Woman's Suffrage Act was presented and referred to the Senate. But a week earlier the general assembly had rejected the “proposed amendment which was the 19th to the constitution of the US. This was the movement to secure for women the right to vote. Other southern states fought to keep the women away from the polls.
ReplyDeleteAn example of a progressive form is the Interstate Commerce Act. This act was passed in 1877 and was adressed to the issues of railroad abuse and discrimination. The act required that shipping rates were fair and rates had to be published. Also price discrimination against small markets and secret rebates were made illegal. This is liberal because the goverment had to step in and make laws that outlawed discrimination in order to help small bussiness still prosper.

ReplyDeleteIn 1909 the meat packing industry was established as a result of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. This novel introduced the repulsive conditions of butcher shops. After this was published crucial changes were made to solidify more healthy and well packaged meat. This was progressive because it greatly improved working conditions and quality of meats.

This was pased during the Progressive Era and the reasoning behind this , even though it is rather apparent, is that men had the right to vote and woman did not . With this amendment ratified throughout the United States , all woman registered to vote could now vote if they chose to. This reform is progressive/liberal becuase woman had always been discriminated against , and this is a radical change.
ReplyDeleteProhibition was a time when the manufature, sale, or usage of alcohol was banned. Prohibition started in the early 1920's. Prohibition started because the use of alcohol was getting abused and people of the communities thought that it was affecting the kids. In 1933 Prohibition ended. I think that prohibition is liberal because the government is stepping in to take control of the overuse of alcohol in the society.

ReplyDeleteOne of the many examples of Progressive Reform was the 19th amendment, otherwise known as the Women's Suffrage reform. Out of every state only Wyoming allowed women to vote until the 1890's. It wasn't until the 1920's that it became a nation wide progressive movement. Although it was mainly upper and middle class women who fought for voting and rights some men joined in as well.
ReplyDeleteThis was most definitely a progressive movement due to the fact that government is supposed to ensure equal rights, therefore it is up to them to pass laws allowing women to vote.
On April 20th, 1923 the Supreme Court decided that a minimum wage was important in work places. People were getting paid small amounts of money for a long period of work. The government decided that a minimum wage per hour was a good idea so that people could work and get paid at a rate that was fair. This reform was liberal because the government got involved to help the people.
ReplyDeleteAn example of progressive reforms is the Housing and Sanitation reforms. Reformers urged cities to pass a legislation which would set standards for housing, trying to eliminate the worst tenements. Including sanitation matters such as garbage pick up, and sewage systems. This legislation would require the hiring of inspectors to see that these standards were met. This is Liberal because this legislation requires government involement to improve living conditions.

One example of a progressive reform would be Prohibition set in place in 1917. This progressive reform was created due to the social effects it was thought to have on society. Alcohol was that to be the source of evil causing violence in many leading to abuse in some households. This substance was blamed for problems in many marriages. This reform was the beginning to a liberal progressive movement, and like we had talked about in class, liberal is to protect individuals human rights using a larger government role to solve problems in society which at the time was thought to be alcohol.
ReplyDeleteIn 1883, the government passed the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act, in turn, creating the United States Civil Service Commission which was implemented to establish a three-person, bi-partisan panel assigned to produce exams to hire federal employees based on merit. This law only applied to federal government positions. This is a form of progressivism because it made it illegal to force political contributions on federal employees.
